Titan Arum! And here it is in all it's glory!
This flower is found in the rainforests of Sumatra and only flowers every 1000 days (3 years) and it doesn't last for long - typically 3 days. The most astonishing thing of all is that it smells like rotten meat and is 9 feet tall and 3 feet across! That is why it was nicknamed by David Attenborough 'the corpse flower'. This smell attracts pollinators (carrion flies and beetles). It is actually a collection of flowers clustered around the central stalk (this is what produces the smell) but when you see it it looks like one big flower and is regarded to be one of the largest flowers in the world.
When I was living in London the Titan Arum was flowering at Kew Gardens and boy did I make sure I got to see it. It is amazing!

Interestingly, I also found another very large flower species native to the Sumatran rainforest that has the corpse smell.....Rafflesia arnoldii. It is a different shape and flowers for 6-7 days. This flower parasites off a small vine for energy!
The sad fact is that the Sumatran rainforest is being cut down and much of the biodiversity is being displaced or lost.

I knew about Rafflesia arnoldii before but not about Titan Arum. how would you describe it's smell? lol :D Nice post btw!
