Baby chicks - I'm awe-struck!

in #nature7 years ago

Our Australorp hen has been sitting eggs for the past 22 days. Two chicks died in the shell, and I was nervous that the rest of the eggs wouldn't hatch either. But tonight when I went to the backyard to check on them, I heard peeping noises, and found three chicks underneath her and the other chicks are pecking their way out of their eggs!

I know that birds hatch eggs every day, millions of times, but I am struck by how miraculous the whole process really is! The bird has to tend to the eggs day after day, without much food or water or exercise...The temperature and humidity have to be right. The mama bird even knows when a chick has died, so she can push it away and it won't rot the other eggs!

The baby birds have to know how to peck their way out at just the right time - not too soon, and not too late either. Or they will die.

It. Is. A. Friggin. MIRACLE. I am in awe!
