A very common situation that law enforcement officers get sent to are domestic disturbances. Domestics are typically very messy because these situations are emotional for the people involved and it is certain that no matter what course of action the police take, at least one party will be unhappy.
And so it was that one day while working with Kyle we received a call that a lady was attacked by her husband. The female was able to grab her children, get them into the car and escape to safety. The dispatchers described the vehicle as a green Honda and the driver as a short white female with blonde hair named Kim. I set out immediately to the address provided. Within 30 seconds into my drive I saw a green Honda driven by a person matching Kim’s description. Kyle and I immediately pulled the car over and Kim jumped out the vehicle. She then says “Officers, I am so happy to see you.” As soon as I saw Kim, relief washes over me. Kim looked uninjured and her kids also seemed fine. I calmly asked Kim what happened, who at this time was extremely hyper. She started bouncing around and swung her hands up and down. Kim then says “ok. So my husband just walked in and punched me in the face.” She then yells “bang”!!! I wasn’t sure what to make out of that, but then Kim went on and said “…so I punched him back”. “Next thing you know we are having a full on fight in the kitchen. I was able to knock him back and he ran off.” I stared at Kim a little confused because like I stated earlier she looked completely uninjured but she just told me that she got into an all out fist fight and barely survived. I then asked “uhhhh…. Are you hurt?” Kim responds “I don’t think so.” She then checked her arm and found a small bruise on her elbow. Kim grins and says “oh I’m hurt right here.” I’m looking at the bruise and I tell Kim to go back to the house. We drive back to the house and as I am walking up there I see a man about 6’3 200lbs just waiting for us. His watery red eyes gave the appearance as though he had been crying.
The man introduced himself as Jason. We asked Jason what happened and through tears he said “nothing.”; thus also confirming my earlier observation but clearly he was lying. Kyle looks down and sees that Jason’s bare foot seemed to have an injured toe. Something must have hit his toe extremely hard. The nail was broken and it was bleeding. Kyle pointed that out and before long Jason breaks down and starts sobbing again and in the process took off his shirt. On his chest were two bite marks and his body was covered in scratches clearly to be seen. Jason tells us what happened and his story begins by telling us that he has been cheating on Kim for seven years. He couldn’t take the guilt any longer and made the decision to tell Kim of his dark secret. He then begged Kim for a second chance but as soon as he stopped talking Kim lunged at him and began biting and scratching.. Jason said that he was able to push Kim off of him and ran to the bathroom. Before he could lock the door a very angry Kim forced it open and injured the toe. At lastJason managed to close the door and locked it. Kyle and I looked at each other and with a nod affirmed that Jason’s version of the incident makes sense. Kim’s injuries just didn’t add up with her story. We turned our attention to Kim and Kyle just said “I know what happened.”
Kim went quiet, put her head down and stared at the ground. When she lifted her head up again it was as though a light went on and her personality had completely changed. She looked at my hands and then looked at Kyle’s who was wearing a wedding ring. Kim then tried to get in Kyle’s face and said “you’re married. Do you know how long Jason and I have been together? 7 years! Do you know how long he has been cheating on me? 7 years! If you found out that your wife was cheating on you for 7 years wouldn’t you act the same way I did?” Without missing a beat Kyle replied loudly; “Hey! This isn’t about me. Put your hands behind your back!”. I put her in hand-cuffs and had to drive her to be booked.
While walking to the car Kim kept yelling at her husband Jason; “this is your fault. How could you.” In my head I was like “umm you attacked him…” The entire ride to the jail Kim was in complete disbelief that she was being arrested. In her eyes she did no wrong but simply gave Jason at the very least what he deserved. A few months later Kyle responded to an alarm call at the same address. When he got there Kim and Jason were having a dinner party. It seemed as if they worked through their problems and that Kim had forgiven Jason. Kyle did say however that Kim was still mad at us.

Early in my career I came across and read a fascinating book called "My Six Convicts". It detailed the work of a prison psychiatrist and it was so compelling that regardless of their crimes, the convicts were able to justify their actions while simultaneously condemning their fellow prisoners for their crimes.
So a thief, for instance, would say "I only stole to be able to eat...at least I didn't kill anyone like "Joe". And "Joe" would say, "I only defended myself, I never intentionally took anything that someone else worked hard for"
It was these types of justifications that I would hear over and over and over again throughout my career. Understanding that most people have an inability for clear self-analysis helped me to better understand society in general.
