Eldest, Chapters 37-40

Chapters read:

  • Elva
  • Resurgence
  • Why Do You Fight?
  • Black Morning Glory

These chapters we get to know a lot more about Elva, the baby girl Eragon and Saphira attempted to bless in 'Eragon'. Eragon and Saphira were both very much novices when they tried to bless a random baby in Farthen Dûr and well, their ignorance backfired. Instead of protecting and improving this girl's life they made her kind of like a vacuum for other people's ailments of all sorts. The blessing created a side effect for the girl, who we learn is named Elva, and that side effect is that she has grown at an insane rate.

Elva is still as creepy as I remember when I read about her years ago. If anything she is more creepy reading it now LOL. She reminds me of Halloween in general, just spooky. She doesn't even seem evil, just seriously odd and seriously wise. She is a pretty unique character in the Inheritance Cycle and she can be a symbol for many things I feel. Fascinating character.

The rest of these chapters are basically charming, character developing chapters. Eragon and Saphira are still very much growing up and it is nice to see them get to actually be in a routine for the first time like, ever. Since Saphira was hatched the pair have not had a chance to relax. Oromis is a stricter much more serious teacher and overall Eragon's studies have become much more intense.

As a kid I thought Elves were a lot cooler and they are still extremely cool, but now that I am older I don't think I'd really want to live as an elf LOL. They seem both chill yet also uptight and also they don't eat meat, which would STINK to not be able to do. Not sure if it's a rule for real or not though.

I think my favorite quote from the entire book so far came from Saphira in chapter Black Morning Glory when she says to Eragon : 'Live in the present, remember the past, and fear not the future, for it doesn't exist and never shall. There is only now.'

I mean that's an insanely good quote. I definitely needed to hear that.
