The United States has pulled back its ambassador to Zambia following a column with experts in the southern African country after he censured the imprisoning of a gay couple, international safe haven sources said on Monday.

A representative for the U.S. State Department said Washington is "unnerved" by the Zambian government's explanation that

Ambassador Daniel Foote's position "is never again legitimate."

"In spite of this activity, the United States stays focused on our organization with the Zambian individuals," the representative said. "We look for an open and forthright relationship of shared regard, similar with the liberal guide gave to the Zambian individuals by the United States."

Zambia's high court a month ago imprisoned the male gay couple for a long time for taking part in sexual relations "against the request for nature", a choice the U.S. ambassador said was shocking.

President Edgar Lungu said on Dec. 15 that Zambia, a significant recipient of U.S. help, had sent a dissent letter to Washington over the comments by Foote and was anticipating a reaction.

A U.S. international safe haven source who isn't permitted to give articulations revealed to Reuters that Washington had chosen to review its ambassador since it was hard for him to work in Zambia.

"Since Lungu says he wouldn't like to work with Foote, there was no point of him remaining. Likewise remember that there are security issues so Washington need their man back," the source said.

"The U.S. can't be paying a pay to somebody who can't work in light of the fact that the hosts don't need him," a second U.S. international safe haven source said.

Zambia's remote undertakings service didn't react to a solicitation for input.

Zambia gets countless dollars consistently in money related help from the United States, some of which goes toward battling HIV/AIDS.

African nations have a portion of the world's most restrictive laws administering homosexuality. Same-sex connections are viewed as forbidden and gay sex is a wrongdoing crosswise over the vast majority of the landmass, with disciplines extending from detainment to death.

"The United States solidly restricts maltreatment against LGBTI people. Governments have a commitment to guarantee that all individuals can openly appreciate the all inclusive human rights and central opportunities to which they are entitled," the State Department representative said.
