Street music is a style of music that emphasizes the everyday lives of commoners. It is a style of music that everyone who grew up in slums or shanty can easily relate with. Many Nigerians are more comfortable with this style of music because it speaks to their current reality. This genre of music usually takes the form of hip-hop music but it proves to be more radical. Millions of Nigerians are fans of this genre of music.
In Nigeria currently, there is a new wave of street music championed by someone who out of the blues became a household name. It started like a joke but it has grown to being something anyone can readily overlook.
Naira Marley is the guy behind the new wave of street hip-hop. His name ‘Naira Marley’ is inspired by Jamaican reggae artiste ‘Bob Marley.’ His first single ‘Marry Juana’ released in 2014 brought him to limelight. He had collaborated with Olamide in the song ‘Issa Goal.’
Few years down the line, it looks as though we would be hearing more from him (Naira Marley) and less from Olamide. Olamide is probably feeling intimidated by the strength of this small boy, this boy who quit suckling his mother’s breast just yesterday.
He has now named the fans of the Naira Marley brand ‘Marlians’ and the level of seriousness with which people have taken this whole craze leaves much to be desired. There is more of this to be seen in days, weeks, and months to come. For now, it’s Naira Marley on the lips of many Nigerians. All hail the king of AfroBaashment, NAIRA MARLEY.
Naira didn't dethrone anyone. In fact, all his fans are also Olamide fans, but not all Olamide fans are Naira's. We shouldn't cause commotion in the streets, please. Naira Marley is simply the next rated in the street. Olamide has gone global.
