President Bola Tinubu, speaking through the Minister of Information, emphasized during a recent meeting with the 36 governors in Abuja that Nigeria must not resort to importing food items to combat the escalating costs of food production.

He underscored the nation's capacity to feed itself and even emerge as a net exporter of food products to neighboring African nations.

Tinubu highlighted the government's commitment to addressing challenges in food production, viewing current issues as temporary hurdles that demand proactive solutions.

He stressed the importance of prioritizing Nigeria's self-sufficiency in food production and expressed optimism about the country's potential to contribute significantly to regional food security.

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, asserted during a recent press briefing at Aso Villa, Abuja, that Nigeria is fully capable of sustaining itself without the need to import food items.

Idris emphasized the nation's potential to not only meet its own food needs but also become a net exporter of food products to other countries.

He highlighted the collective commitment of the governors to collaborate with President Bola Tinubu in bolstering investments in the agricultural sector to enhance food availability for Nigerians.

Idris underscored that these investments encompass both crop production and livestock development, aimed at ensuring food security nationwide.

President Tinubu, following his meeting with the 36 state governors, reaffirmed the government's stance by declaring that there would be no establishment of a price control board for food commodities nor approval for food importation.

Instead, he pledged support for farmers through various schemes to boost food production.

The meeting, attended by high-ranking officials including the Vice President, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, and several ministers, addressed concerns over protests erupting in various states due to the high cost of living and food items.

Tinubu assured that his administration is committed to alleviating the food crisis and outlined plans to support farmers, including the implementation of livestock development and management strategies such as dairy farming.

These measures, he believes, will contribute to overcoming the challenges facing the nation's food supply.
