Everyone has specific places, food or buildings that one is associating when thinking about country. And when I now think about the Netherlands it's clearly the sea and the dikes that come to my mind. For the Netherlands which literally means lower countries, however, this combination of the water next door and a significant part of the country below the sea level confronted our Dutch neighbors with a major problem.
So, why is the Netherlands not underwater?
