In the bowels of Mexico, between the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila and Durango expands a desert known as Zona del Silencio, where -with no scientific explanation- the radio waves are interrupted, the clocks go mad and the compasses become disoriented.
Stories of mysterious lights, phenomena that interfere in electronic systems, strange plants and creatures, mysterious people, and frequent meteorite falls have made this place a mythical destination for many.
The place is located at two thousand meters above sea level, and curiously it is on the 27th parallel of northern latitude, on which there is also the Bermuda Triangle, the Himalayas and the Pyramids of Egypt. It is identified by an obelisk of rusty iron of 2.5 meters high, which also serves to mark the union of the three entities.
It is not that there are no sounds, noises or whispers; the name Zone of Silence obeys to the phenomenon by which the radio waves do not flow of normal way. It is necessary to locate certain bands to be able to establish communication, although, in any case, it is always deficient. It is the impossibility of communication with the outside that has given the place its name.
The area, inhabited by small groups of between three and four houses, separated from each other by very long distances, is a true wasteland. Their stones, without containing iron, nor any other metallic material, are nonetheless magnetic and attract magnets. It is believed that, in prehistoric times, the Zone of Silence was part of an immense oceanic bed, which would explain the presence of abundant marine sediments and fossilized fish and ruminant skeletons.
This place became famous in 1970, after the fall of NASA's Athenas rocket, precisely because it fell within the Bag of Mapimí; in its magnetic center. The North American stories about the search for the rocket mention a curious fact, the radar devices that they took to locate the Athenas did not work, they were useless, and the rocket was only found a day later.
After the discovery, in the vicinity, a railway was built by which the rocket would be taken. In addition, under the pretext that it was contaminated, the Americans took some tons of land to investigate them. From such an event, rumors were born that this land had unknown magnetic properties.
The first reported case of technical problems in the Zona del Silencio occurred to Francisco Sarabia Tinoco. Sarabia is one of the most famous aviators in Mexico, and is named after the national airport in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas. Francisco was flying over Durango in the 1930s, when he entered the airspace above the Chihuahua desert. Suddenly there was a radio silence, which alerted air traffic control that something was not right. Sarabia had to make an emergency landing after his team failed. He survived, but neither he nor the engineers could find an explanation for what had happened.
Other stories speak of a group of blond people (two men and a woman), who appear mysteriously in various parts of the Zone of Silence. On one occasion a tourist got to speak with them, reported that their Spanish was perfect and asked them where they came from, they answered, "from above".
Scientists do not find a logical or rational explanation for all the strange phenomena that occur in the Zone of Silence. One of its theories is that its location allows creating a kind of energy vortex. Is it just a coincidence or is there something more hidden in this area?
