Hydropower : The mills of Folon and Picon

#OpChangeTheWorld2 🌍

The mills of Folon and Picon are a collection of 60 mills in the autonomous community of Galicia in Spain. The energy was provided by the water of a single river, rotating each small mill cascaded so that they could share the same channel of water. Although no longer operational, the restored mills constitute a set of a great cultural heritage of the region. The mills are built in two groups. The first group called Folón Mills, consists of 36 mills and are located on the slope of Folón above a stream that is also called Folón. The second group called Picon Mills, consisting of 24 mills and are located nearby on the creek called Picon.

Basically: the water from the river was used up and down in each mill and produced energy ...

Most of the mills are two-story structures built of stone with the actual mill located on the top floor, while the ground floor is occupied by the machinery that drives the mill. The earliest inscription on these structures dates back to 1702, although there seems to be documentary evidence that these facilities were active in the 17th century. In 1988, the mills of Folón and Picón were declared sites of cultural interest. There is a hiking trail with the possibility of free guided tours to see and understand the operation of the mills.
