RMS Titanic strikes an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean (1912)

On this fateful night, the eventual doom of the RMS Titanic began as it struck an iceberg at 11:40pm (ship's time).

The iceberg was spotted by a lookout and the ships captain William Murdoch attempted to steer around the obstacle. However, it was too late and Titanic's starboard hull became damaged. It was not punctured, but dented in such a way that water was able to seep in. Thus, five of Titanic's watertight compartments were breached.

As we all know, the Titanic then began sinking, as only four of these watertight can be filled until the ship will sink.

Since it sank the next day, I will elaborate on it's eventual fate in tomorrow's post.

Sputnik falls back to Earth from orbit after 162 days

Sputnik 2 was a Russian craft and the second craft to ever be launched into Earth's orbit. It launched on November 3rd, 1957. It was the first to carry a living animal, a dog named Laika who died a few hours after launch.

US reaction was interesting, as president Eisenhower kept his cool and said we will not "embark on foolish, costly schemes." He was being pressured to invest in creating fallout shelters in the mists of the successful Russian launch.

Sputnik 2 also discovered the Earth's outer radiation belt, however the Russians were unable to claim the discovery since they were unable to track it and didn't work well with Australia and South America, who had intercepted the tracking signals.
