On this date in 1873, the patent for blue jeans was issued. It was a patent for the typical denim jeans with copper rivets that we all know (and probably wear) today. The patent was issued to Jacob W. Davis and Levi Strauss.

Davis was a Latvian American tailor who is credited with inventing the jeans. He used sturdy cloth (denim) and rivets (copper) to strengthen the weak points where the seems were. He partnered with Levi Strauss.

Strauss was a German-American businessman who founded the first company to manufacture and mass produce blue jeans, Levi Strauss & Co. The partnering with Davis meant the beginning of the wide spread popularity and production of blue jeans.

Amelia Earhart is credited as being the first woman aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. On this date, she took off from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. Roughly 15 hours later, she landed in a field in Northern Ireland.

For this, she received several awards. But Earhart accomplished many things. She wrote best selling books and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. She became a visiting faculty member at Purdue University, was a member of the National Woman’s Party and an early supporter of the Equal Rights Movement.

n 1937, she and navigator Fred Noonan attempted to make a circumnavigational flight around the globe. She and Noonan disappeared over the Pacific Ocean and were never seen or heard from again. Fascination in regards to the disappearance is still very present today.
