When reading the book of Exodus, I'm amazed how much they depended on God for everything. God showed not only Pharaoh signs regarding the 10 plagues but also the Israelites. They saw that God was looking after them and not the Egyptians, by protecting them from the plagues.
However when they left Egypt and when they were by the Red Sea, fear again entered them and they cried out to the Lord for help.
Exodus 14:10-12
10 When the Israelites saw the king and his army marching against them, they were terrified and cried out to the Lord for help. 11 They said to Moses, “Weren't there any graves in Egypt? Did you have to bring us out here in the desert to die? Look what you have done by bringing us out of Egypt! 12 Didn't we tell you before we left that this would happen? We told you to leave us alone and let us go on being slaves of the Egyptians. It would be better to be slaves there than to die here in the desert.”
The verse thereafter is: "Moses answered, 'Don't be afraid!'"
- I like the way it is written with an exclamation mark - this shows that Moses was not afraid and ordered them to also not be afraid.
After they cross the Red Sea and the Egyptians were drowned, the last verse of Exodus 14 says:
31 When the Israelites saw the great power with which the Lord had defeated the Egyptians, they stood in awe of the Lord; and they had faith in the Lord and in his servant Moses.
Faith
This is a hard one. Because we know of how the Israelites made and started worshiping a bull they had made after spending a bit of time in the desert and not having seen Moses for a few days. Faith had escaped them.
Also in the book of Matthew, when Peter walked on water to Jesus, fear got hold of him and he started sinking.
31 At once Jesus reached out and grabbed hold of him and said, “What little faith you have! Why did you doubt?”
I would like to have this faith that I can hold onto and not let know, even when things seem impossible, know that "with God all things are possible."
