“When I was younger I always wanted to be a Bratz doll — I had all of them and the movies,” Martinez tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I always thought Bratz were cooler than Barbie in terms of fashion and makeup; they honestly had a ‘passion for fashion,’ and a lot of girls get inspired by them today still.”
Unlike the classic and wholesome Barbie, Bratz were perceived as fashion-forward and incredibly sassy. They featured almond-shaped eyes adorned with colorful eyeshadow and lush, glossy full lips. Who knew that they’d be ahead of the curve in terms of makeup trends?
Four original 10-inch dolls were released in 2001: Yasmin, Cloe, Jade, and Sasha, and in 2015, a fifth Bratz, Raya, was added to the girl gang. The dolls reached huge success and by the mid-2000s expanded to have movies, video games, web series, and TV shows.
