Do you remember The Ronettes? The iconic girl group out of New York City the early 1960's, that had hit world wide notoriety within a few short years. With smash hits like, "Be My Baby", "Walking in the Rain", "So Young", "Baby I Love You" and many more. The lead singer was Veronica Bennet or Ronnie, later to become known as Ronnie Spector. Her sister, Estelle Bennet was also part of the group, as well as Nedra Talley- who happened to be their cousin.
Originally called "The Darling Sisters", the young talents had their first major break after Estelle (Ronnie's sister), took the initiative to contact the infamous Phil Spector directly, via a phone call one day. When they had finally met with him, he became enthused with Ronnie, but didn't care for the idea of a collective musical group, and wanted to exclude the other two. He was only interested in offering a contract to Ronnie. However, upon hearing the news, the girls' mother decided to intervene, and told Mr. Spector that they would all have to perform together or there would be no deal at all. Phil Spector finally agreed as he didn't have much of a choice, since two out of the three girls were underage. Hence, the Ronettes was formed.
"Be my baby" was playing at the beggining of Mean Streets. One of the best pop bands of history.
Really? Yes, I agree. They were also the only all female group to tour with the Beatles. Thank you!
