It's all about proving identity. And in my case I couldn't do it with the automated system to wrote to Steemit explaining my situation. Given that my account is my real name and I show my face all the time, it wasn't hard for them to confirm that I was the owner of the account. If I couldn't prove my identity there is no way they would have let me back in.
