BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:45 P.M.) - The Ethiopian army has warned Sudan against a "third party" pushing it to go to war with Ethiopia, calling for "commitment to resolving the border conflict through dialogue."

The Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Force, General Berhanu Gula, said in an interview with the Ethiopian News Agency on Thursday, that Ethiopia and Sudan have a long-term relationship, noting that his country played an effective role a year ago in resolving the political crisis in Sudan peacefully and without harm.

He considered that "the Sudanese army encroached on the sovereignty of Ethiopia while the Ethiopian government was carrying out the law enforcement process to bring the extremist military council of the Tigray People's Liberation Front to justice," describing this as a tragic act that he does not expect from Sudan, which has friendly and historical relations with Ethiopia.

The Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Force said that a third party, whom he did not name, was behind "the Sudanese army's violation of Ethiopia's sovereignty with the intention of disrupting negotiations on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam," explaining that "the third party benefited from the fact that Ethiopia is conducting a law enforcement operation and Sudan is in a political transition." .

He stressed the existence of a Sudanese wing that came to fight for the third party, and pointed out that the border disputes between the two countries are not a new phenomenon but have been resolved peacefully, considering that the current problem has been exacerbated by the actions of the third party.

But he stressed that Ethiopia has no desire to go to war with its historical friend, Sudan, and that it wants to solve the problem peacefully, and called on Sudan to solve the differences "through negotiations by avoiding such warlike urges that come from a third party."

He stated that a meeting will be held between the military institutions of the two countries soon, explaining, "The situation has escalated now with the involvement of a third party in the border problem. The aim is to lead us into conflict with our neighbors and achieve their goals."

"We do not have to do what they want. Discussions are now taking place at all levels, including military talks between the two countries," he said.

The Ethiopian general did not specify the name of the third party he spoke about, but it is likely that his statement comes in reference to Egypt, which is one of the 3 countries participating in the negotiations on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
