Scientists from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a new technology that opens new horizons in medicine - the artificial muscle invented by the researchers raises the weight 12,600 times its size.
The inventors note that the artificial muscle consists of carbon fibers and polymer and is driven by an electric current. The tests showed that a 1.6 gram fiber created in this manner is capable of lifting a weight of 1.9 kg.
Artificial muscles, invented earlier, could lift a weight of only a thousand times, exceeding their own. Studies in this area are worth a lot and usually show a weak result, so such developments have not progressed for a long time. However, a group of American scientists led by Samekh Tavfik managed to significantly exceed the previous record, and now artificial muscles lift the weight 12.6 thousand times its weight.
The resulting material has high strength and withstands 60 MPa of mechanical pressure. In this case, the fabric can be extended by 25%. The index of the specific work of the artificial muscle is 622 J / kg, that is, its efficiency is 15 times higher than the indices of natural tissue.
New technology can be used in such areas as robotics, prosthetics and orthopedics.
