I was trying to login to my Cryptopia account to check on some past trades.
The web page was blocked, the site stated that the exchange was "Under Maintenance"
So I circled back to my favorite exchange this morning: now it was official: the exchange was NOT under maintenance, it was hacked.
The New Zealand Police gave an official statement yesterday night:
Both statements talk about significant losses
This is another very sad event, that underlines the importance: never ever store your coins on exchanges!
Keep them safe in a hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger.
That's what I always do: depositing for trading, complete the trade and withdrawing the funds immediately.
I hope none of you is suffering from this event.

"Hi Cryptopians,
Please check our latest update on our twitter page."
The problem: Their last tweet is from Jan 16, so there has not been an update for 6 entire days while soooo many users worldwide have no information on the status of their accounts.
This is not the right way to treat customers!
Greetings @brokernaples
Like you, I hope many people haven't lost so many assets, it must be a fatal blow.
Exchanges have been under constant attack since last year and you don't see a strong enough effort to end these attacks.
Enjoy your day, Piotr.
I am curious about the outcome of this unfortunate event.
But yes, exchanges have to become safer in the future.
Hi @brokernaples
Thanks for replying to my previous comment. I always appreciate people who engage back.
Yours
Piotr
Hello Piotr, I feel the same way. Even I am not every day here on steemit, but I prefer a communication over one sided anonymous posts.
