Vietnam and the U.S. announced the establishment of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development on Sunday (10/9).
President Joe Biden, who arrived in Hanoi Vietnam for a two-day state visit has bring along representatives of the top technological corporates, leading US chip manufacturers and especially Senior executives from Google, Intel, Amkor, Marvell, GlobalFoundries...
You can clearly see the US real intentions behind their visit to Vietnam: to boost Vietnam's global role in different segments of chipmaking (2nd place of Rare earths in the world), as part of Washington's broader strategy to reduce the sector's exposure to China-linked risks, including trade restrictions and tensions over Taiwan.
There are many more reasons that I am about to explain below:
1. Rare Earths
Rare Earth is only the tip of the iceberg, which anyone can clearly define as US main intention. But let's look at the top 5 countries with RARE EARTH RESERVES:
#1. China
#2. Vietnam
#3. Brazil
#4. Russia
#5. India
4/5 are the official members of BRICS except Vietnam.
In this chipmaking battle, US needs Vietnam to balance out the power structure.
2. Vietnam has always been cautious of China
Throughout 4000 years of Vietnamese history, 3 quarters of our time has been fighting over China. If there is a rivalry that can deeply understand China, it must be Vietnam.
The Chinese government often let their citizens to live across the world as a way to slowly increase their political and economic circumstances in those countries. South East Asia economy and politics are all heavily under the manipulation and influence of China, except Vietnam.
Right after the announcement of the new partnership between US and Vietnam, China immediately closed the boarder - making 200 contenders of VN agriculture products ban from exporting. Both countries are heavily damaged from this incident as China is the largest agricultural importer of Vietnam.
