In world news it seems everything is "Donald Trump" related. In the U.S. the divide in the country is prevalent everywhere. Family and friends are at a political view battle. Unfollows or unfriending on social media sights have been reported in large numbers. Arguments at work have erupted as where management has to step in and forbid political talk. Families have concerns that it will even carry over to feuds at the dinner table during this upcoming American national holiday Thanksgiving. World wide financial markets and intruments have been affectid due to the anticipation of Trumps foriegn and domestic planned policies. Even I personally am affected by the protests and growing security at and around Trump’s residence in New York City. It has caused huge commuter delays everywhere in the city.
Word is that there is some concern that the same "Trump phenomana" is happeing over in France. The far-right leader of the Front National party, Marine Le Pen has seen a strong and steady rise in the polls for next years elections. At the moment she is a long shot for the majority vote, but the same could be said of Trump at the same point of the campign. Le Pen has expanded her party's platform from a single-minded focus on immigration and crime with a side of tax cuts and deregulation to a full-blown populist embrace of a strong state. Front National politicians are now much more likely to talk about the harms of globalization and free trade to industrial employment, the horrors of bank bailouts, or the injustice of entitlement cuts, than they are about immigration and crime. Even as the migrant crisis swept the airwaves, Le Pen took a self-imposed hiatus from appearing in the media until the campaign started in earnest in the fall. Everyone in France already knows where she stands on immigration, and headlines about waves of migrants streaming in did her work for her much better than she or anyone else could have.
Meanwhile, Le Pen's warnings that terrorists could smuggle in with the wave of migrants, denounced by the entire political and media class as racist nonsense, have looked prescient since Islamic State terrorists did exactly that and murdered hundreds at the Bataclan and on café terraces around Paris a year ago.
In cryptocurrency news Bitcoin has seen a huge spike in value. The price of bitcoin surpassed $750 this week as it continued to near its 2016 high set back in June. The digital currency rose to as much as $752.04 on 17th November, before falling back, according to CoinDesk USD Bitcoin Price Index (BPI) data. Bitcoin prices then proceeded to fluctuate over the course of the week, surpassing $750 multiple times, but failing to build support above this level. As of this posting Bitcoin has settled around the $733 usd mark. The digital currency rose to as much as $752.04 on 17th November, before falling back, according to CoinDesk USD Bitcoin Price Index (BPI) data. Meanwhile the newly released Zcash has struggled to find a footing. Zcash, which leverages zero-knowledge proofs to ensure anonymity, has been struggling to find a place in the global markets after enjoying a highly publicized release on 28th October that saw its market cap value hit $2m. After opening at $225.74 usd on 11th November, ZEC tokens had fallen 69% to $70.60 usd at weeks end. One reason for the drop is that the currency’s supply has been steadily rising since the launch, surging to more than 50,000, according to CoinMarketCap data.
Charity story of the week, (reported in the guardian) The BBC’s annual Children in Need telethon raised a record of nearly £47m in a night of comedy, song and tributes to the late Sir Terry Wogan.
Presenter Rochelle Humes said the veteran broadcaster, who hosted the live appeal for 35 years, would have been proud of the “absolutely incredible” sum. His son Mark Wogan said it was always his father’s favourite night of the year. The show also included a Sir Terry Wogan fundraiser of the year award, a self-deprecating Great British Bake Off sketch featuring the actor Eddie Redmayne, comedy songs from Ricky Gervais and a glimpse of the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special.
Children in Need’s chief executive, Simon Antrobus, said: “Everyone should feel really proud. The remarkable generosity shown, and the amazing total raised, will go on to help change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people all across the UK.”
The appeal raised £46.2m, nearly £10m higher than last year – the first Children in Need broadcast without Sir Terry hosting - after he was forced to pull out because of ill health. The Limerick-born former Radio 2 presenter and Eurovision song contest commentator died on 31 January aged 77 after a short battle against cancer.
Announcing the fundraising total, Humes said: “That’s absolutely incredible and I just know how proud Sir Terry would have been.” Presenters Tess Daly and Greg James kicked off the show with a promise to “give everything” as a tribute to Wogan and his years of service. Graham Norton, who inherited Eurovision duties from the broadcaster, also co-presented with Ade Adepitan, and introduced a montage of the former Blankety Blank presenter’s best moments.
Children In Need supports 2,400 projects across the UK and has raised more than £600m since it began in 1980.
