2017 was a hell of a year, but what exactly defined it?
Presidency of Donald Trump
This was easily the most talked about moment in this year. Businessman and a reality television personality grabbed a victory over the democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and took the presidential seat from Barack Obama. At the beginning of the election no one saw it coming. It was all taken as a joke until the harsh reality hit half of the United States in the face.
This moment didn't affect only the US and it's citizens but the whole world. It's just a matter of time when WW3 breaks out considering Trump's satisfaction for power and domination.
North Korea escalation
We are already talking about Donald Trump, so why not talk about him a little bit more?
“I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged U.S. dotard with fire.” - Kim Jong-Un
Those words were spoken by the North Korean leader days after Trump went personal and called him "Little rocket man". This personal war between two very powerful presidents was to an actual war, a nuclear one to be more precise.
A few bombing operations happened and those actions were a sign of a possible nuclear exchange. Even though, chances of that happening weren't that high, it was a possibility. Who knows, maybe 2018 is the nuclear year. Hopefully not...
Catalan independence movement
Catalan nationalism seeked independence of Catalonia from Spain, and they got it. The referendum was held on 1 October, 2017.
"Do you want Catalonia to become an independent state in the form of a republic?" The "Yes" side won, with 2,044,038 (92.01%) voting for independence and 177,547 (7.99%) voting against, on a turnout of 43.03%.
Also, this movement was known for it's brutality on the people of Catalonia. Spanish government was doing everything they can to stop the independence process from completing.
Economic disaster of Venezuela
The economic disaster of this South American country started while Hugo Chavez was leading it. It extended all the way to the current Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. The crisis has affected the average life of many Venezuelans. Price rose 800% and due to lack of proper nutrition the population had lost an average of at least 8.7 kg, which is roughly 20 pounds. The rise of unemployment lead to many social movements aimed at the government.
In the end, I would like to wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR and hopefully 2018 is going to be the year of Steemit!
