I think there is still ample opportunity for the US to be a leader on environmental issues. There are many layers to the way our country is set up and this is an issue that can be tackled at each of those levels. If Trump does commit to withdrawing from the Paris Deal, state and city governments can still enact their own rules. Bill de Blasio has already said NYC would commit to the climate agreement even if Trump drops it, and I would imagine other liberal areas of the country (which happen to be densely populated urban centers with large carbon footprints), will follow suit.
