The Security Council of the United Nations has, so far, been unable to vote a favorable motion for a truce in the Syrian inferno of Guta. Between successive voting delays, Berlin and Paris have called on Moscow to endorse a text that has been modified to suit the Russians throughout the day. Meanwhile, in the troubled Damascene district controlled by opponents, the bloodletting continues for the more than 400,000 civilians trapped between two fires, unable or unwilling to leave their homes.
"In the face of the suffering of the people in Guta East, France and Germany call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the implementation of a humanitarian truce to provide assistance to the civilian population and emergency medical evacuations, as has been the case requested by the United Nations, "the letter sent to President Vladimir Putin by Macron and Merkel said. Both tried to empathize with Russia by condemning the attacks on civilians and the Russian embassy in Damascus.
Similarly, the process to get Moscow to support the motion submitted to the Security Council has had to be similar. From the initial text the verb "decide" has been changed to "demand" a cease-fire. Also, to please Russia, it has been proposed to specify that the truce would not respect "individuals, groups, initiatives and associated entities" with Al Qaeda or the Islamic State, when the previous formulation was limited to mentioning the names of both armed groups, with active presence among the raised rows.
The objective is to put an end to what the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, defined as a "hell on earth". According to several accounts, more than 460 people have died and two thousand have been injured since last Sunday, when pressure intensified, by air and land, of those loyal to the government of President Bashar Asad. Yesterday, under a shower of bombs that condemned civilians to take refuge in basements, the Administration released pamphlets on Guta proposing a humanitarian corridor to the enclosures.
The response from within Guta, controlled by several mainly fundamentalist armed groups, was one of distrust and rejection. "They propose to leave the area and have their security" guaranteed "by the army - the same army that besieges and bombs them in the first place," an activist quipped from Guta. Regarding the motion for resolution, the main brigades rejected "categorically any initiative that means that the inhabitants have to leave their homes and are transferred to another place."

There is no good outcome here and there are no good guys. On one side we have Syria's Assad, who we all recognize as a murderous dictator, Russian's Putin, and Iran. On the opposing side we have the so called "rebels" that are made up of jihadists, aka ISIS, Al Qaida, Syrian based terror group Al Nusra, and many others with nefarious ties to evil groups. We need to get out, because we cannot team up with either side unless we are complicit in dealing with terrorists.
