Prague´s famous (yet controversial) statues of babies will be displayed in California

in #news7 years ago

Hi everyone!

If you check my daily Prague/Czech Republic Photo Challenge regularly, you have probably noticed that my homeland is full of unusual sculptures and statues, ranging from interesting and funny to weird and downright creepy.

Some of the most famous but also controversial modern statues were created by the prominent Czech artist David Cerny who is also the author of the series of statues known simply as "The Babies". Most of these "babies" were installed on the Zizkov Lookout Tower and some more can be found "crawling" on the ground around Kampa in the historic center of Prague.

The statues are black, huge (3.5 m or 11.5 ft long and 2.6 m or 8.5 ft tall) and their faces were replaced with barcodes, which only adds to their disturbing appearance.

Some of the statues are now on their way to the city of Palm Springs in California where they will stay for 20 months as a temporary exhibit. If there are any fans of bizarre statues among my American followers, make sure to check out these babies as they certainly are one of the creepiest artworks ever created in my homeland.

We found these statues very creative, yet very disturbing... We think that's what you can call Art... :)

Yep, the true art:)

seems to be creativity of artist. Why these are called controversial sculpture? Is there any special reason?

Just the appearance.... nothing out of ordinary:).....

Some Christians are bothering the bar code instead of the face. Reportedly symbolizes the number of the beast.

Wow what an amazing statue. That is great creative by David Cerny and it looks really big and really nice as well as creepy too.Loved the design and architecture of the statue and the building wit it too.It is also added to my list when i visit Czech Republic.I am thinking of reading the book "The Babies". Thanks for sharing it with us.@czechglobalhosts

They look robots more than the babies!!

Oh well, I gess you could say that as well:).....

Wow they're very weird but I can't deny the amazing work the sculpturer did.

Yeah, I think he did pretty well.... not an easy stuff to do, a lot of hard work and dedication involved in making something this big.....

Yes, sure! We can't deny he had tons of work to do that!

Is it just me or do they look like
creepy alien babies?
They are interesting, that's for sure,
and I can see why they're controversial,
but art does not need to please everybody,
if an artist tries to please everybody
then by doing that, they cease to be an artist,
and instead become nothing more than
a craftsman.
I think the babies, in all their alienesque creepiness
are beautiful

Very well said! Thank you for stopping by. Tomas

Omg these are one of the creepiest statues I’ve ever seen! Barcode face? Maybe the artist wanted to convey the message that some babies are treated as products in the “human trafficking industry”? 😢 Or maybe these babies just appeared in the artist’s dream and he made them into touchable statues before the memory faded haha! Sometimes artworks are just difficult to understand!

Oh well, whatever it is.... I guess we all have to use our imagination to understand it the way we want:)....

Haha you’re right!! It’s open to interpretation ;pp

Wouldn't have looked so creepy if the faces weren't replaced with barcodes.

oh cool... I like this art !

They are truly creepy. I can’t imagine seeing these

Very interesting babies. The barcodes on their faces are disturbing.

all the world's needs are all done by babies. it's a good imagination for amazing photographs

Talking of unusual.

This is super unusual xD

Theyre very odd looking I just wonder what the true meaning is. Does it have to do with us being dehumanized a bit in various areas or does it specifically relate to children? Thats what I'd like to know I'm not 100% sure what it means

I'm a little scared to see that statues .but interesting this post. Thanks for shared it,

i think people over there are too much talented.
prague is full of architectural beauty and these unusual sculptures and statues.
