Update on the Liben Bridge case: the bridge will be demolished and replaced

in #news7 years ago

Hi everyone,

Some two weeks ago, I informed you about that fact that Prague could lose one of its famous bridges in this post.

A renowned Cubist masterpiece, the Liben Bridge was in a very bad condition and the Prague authorities were about to decide whether the bridge would be reconstructed or torn down.

Sadly, the authorities just decided to demolish the bridge and replace it with a new, similar bridge at a cost of more than 500 million CZK (20 million EUR / 25 million USD).

Measuring 780 m (2,560 ft), the Liben Bridge was the longest bridge in Prague and one of the oldest and most important Cubist bridges in the world. Built in 1928, the bridge connected Prague neighborhoods Liben and Holesovice.

Because of the great cultural and historical significance of the bridge, massive demonstrations against the demolition are expected to take place on and around the old bridge.

Expected massive demonstrations against the demolition of bridge reveals that Czech people love their culture, old architect, heritage and traditions. Such an amazing nation. Indeed a sad news but some time due to safety purpose heart breaking steps become inevitable. May be government amaze people by constructing new bridge of same architect as old one. This may win the heart of Czech republic people. @czechglobalhosts

Oh wow that is an really amazing news that there is going to be a new bridge and yeah many people will be sad of it as it had been there from 1928 which is a long time and it has it own culture and history. But i think it for the betterment as the bridge is old need to demolish to make new one.It is sad news as well as good news as it is beautiful country and everything should strong and good. Thanks for sharing it with us.I am expecting new bridge when i visit there from now, don't you think @czechglobalhosts

It is usually hard to let got but then we realize that it was for better. Let´s hope this will be the case.

@czechglobalhosts, Firstly thanks for updating steemians. Absolutely sadness news to hear us. * Liben Bridge* is most oldest and longest bridge in Prague. It connected some neighborhood town with Prague. I don't accept Authorities taken demolish the bridge. They have to repair this. With massive demonstrations against the demolition, I guess Authority can be change their mind. We hope will do best thing.

@czechglobalhosts do you have any idea when this demolition will be done ? I really want to see this bridge before the demolition but i have exam until end of june.

No info in regards to that yet. I will keep you posted if I do get any updates on that.

Thanks so much

It’s sad to see such a marvelous creation getting demolished, the bridge was only 90 yrs but it’s great the authorities prioritize public safety and transport over all. It’s a great example. This project is huge considering the investment .i am sure that people are going to gather around to see the demolition and pay their respect by doing so time takes it toll on everything be it a man or a manmade thing , inevitably everything has to pass away when the time comes. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Oh no! It looks bad at first but as it will be reconstructed, so it is a good thing for its countrymen! The safety is more important in any case!

Yep, the safety is the number one and cannot be played with in any way.

They have decided the right thing to do!
because human's life was in danger.
I know it was the historical bridge, but the new will be historical for our Son's or daughter's kids.
And the main thing is it will be built according to the new technologies and will be more powerful than the previous one.

Agreed. I am with you on this one.

Thank you :) God Bless you :)

It makes no sense to bring down the bridge in terms of cost and historic significance. The government really takes stupid decisions sometimes. Rehabilitate it and let it serve as a monument

Oh well, there are two sides of the coin. Sometimes it does make more sense to ge things replaced by the new ones. Let´s hop this will be the case as well.

I was hoping the Authority will change their mind and repair it but they want it off completely. Maybe they have engineers looked upon it and feel is safer to construct a new one than repair

I am sure that is the case and hope the new one will be much better and will serve the next generations as well as the old one did.

Hi @czechglobalhosts I saw a news about this oldest and traditional bridge of your country. I would like to share with you what was I saw. According to

Radio Czech,

Around 200 people blocked Prague’s Libeň Bridge on Wednesday evening in protest at plans from the city authorities to demolish and replace the structure. The demonstrators also said a new bridge should not be commissioned, as the city envisages, without an architecture competition.

But I think, the decision of demolish this tradition is not acceptable. They (the authority of prague) should be more respectable about their tasks.

Thank you for sharing some additional info on the subject. That is truly appreciated.

Yes I've see you updated about Liben Bridge before. But now very disappointed news to heard everyone who loved Czech's amazing architecture. Hope all doing well. But I have question from you Mr. Thomas. Had authorities already confirmed demolish the bridge??
Also huge costs will spend for replace new.

Yes, the decision has already been made which is sad for some. Hopefully, it was a right decision. We will have to wait and see.

THANKS FOR SHARING

Plz made your own comment. Seems like a bot.

It might have history, but safety and what's best comes first. The cost of rehabilitation and building a new one might not be that much different (factoring depreciation)

for which reason they plan to remove it???

nice place, and beautiful scenery

Yeah Nice place beauty scenery. But very soon it will demolish by Prague authority. Sadness news who love to Prague.

What a pity, I've read it before and it's really worrying that stories are destroyed and forgotten, there are always other ways and not to demolish a work of art.

Being an engineer I used to see most of the times "Safety first", so in this case I must say the same thing Safety comes first because nothing is more precious than human life, I hope they'll built the new one using latest infrastructure technologies but old design to keep their heritage and culture alive.
