Got a call from a viewer this week asking whether, even in the best of cases, Presidents can do much about racism at large. Thoughts? Do you support more of a top down or bottom up approach to issues of race?
What would a President do exactly? Openness comes from exposure to different realities, opinions and beliefs. Also, it comes with honest talking and debate.
Most of the time change comes from the bottom up because those are the people who are truly struggling and are ready to fight and change it. On the other hand, people at the top are not cornered and their interests are not the same and they are not motivated as much to change things even if they wanted to change them.
Agreed David, any meaningful change will come from the bottom up since the top can always change it's mind (every 4 - 8 years). As long as America only has about 60% of the voting population ACTUALLY voting, it does not matter who is "elected" president. If that 60% is roughly split between Reps and Dems (like 2016), that means no matter who won about 70% of the voting age population would get a president that they DID NOT vote for. The system is broken...
Even if the presidents begin from the bottom to the top, it will make no difference. Cos its the top officials that even began racism, so they need the orientation first... its the master that sees his subordinates as inferior cos of their skin colour.
I think more of a top down approach would help. I say this because judging from the Trump racism saga, if presidents begin from the top to preach against racism, its easier for the country men to follow. Even putting it into law that racism should be abolished helps. If Trump had made a more acceptable statement that didnt sound racial, i guess no one would know that he is a racist
I think top down appraoch needs for racism problem. Because so many people think same as their president. Actually, They always do what presidents say. I hope racism is going to be forgot, also as a word.
Great subject thank you for sharing
I don't think that is a priority for the Government, In the actual world I think that there is a financial racism more than ethnic or other ...
Thank you for the great work :)
I guess it strongly depends on the country you come from. Presidents have different powers in the different countries, so this question can't be answerd that easily.
Our leaders only influence those who have no general direction or need a leader to follow. What leaders like trump however can do is give certain Ideologies a air of legitimacy. America did not turn racist over night it has always been racist. It starts with legal paperwork that categorises people by race (which not many other countries do btw. ) and ends with the more bold face organisations like the KKK.
Under Trump all these hidden racists, bigots and religious fanatics feel free to come from under their rocks into the light and carry their ignorance and small minds like a badge of honour. It is terrifying but it also shines a light to where we have gone wrong as a society. We cannot regulate or bury our issues under a mountain of political correctness we need to let it air out in the open.
Of course our government agencies need to be held to a neutral standard, but private businesses and organisations should be left to serve and allow admittance to whomever they like. Why ?-because the true unsubsidised free market will teach them a lesson when they lose business for being despicable human beings. Let them fly their freak flag high and allow me from banning them from my premises as well.
The second part of the equation is education and outreach create. For example youth programs that bring kids from all walks of life together.
Third we need to revamp our school system it can't be that there is such a discrepancy in the level of education an resources of our kids, those kids are our future it is time we step up to the plate because we cannot expect politicians to do it. If you haven't got the memo yet, there is no hero coming ! It is up to you , me and grassroots organisations to change the world our politicians are far to happy with the status quo!
To stop racism, the president can only try by show good example..but everyone has a part to play to stop it..everyone should start seeing each other as one rather than segregating each other because of the skin colour..in a way , the president can pass a law..maybe pushment for people who make racist comment etc..but he cannot stop racisim singlehandedly

Completely agree with you

PRESIDENTS CAN SINGLE HANDEDLY SOLVE RACISM!
