The original name of the artist is Abel Tesfaye, He is Canadian artist/performer.
His father left him and his family when he was very young, His mom and maternal grandmother raised him. His mom worked as a nurse and a caterer to support the family.

The name "Weeknd" comes from his real life experience. One weekend he and his friend Lamar decided to drop out from school. He was just 17 when he packed his bag, put a mattress in his friend's shitty van and drove Off. He never came back after that weekend and that is how he got inspired to keep the name as "weeknd"
He started a YouTube channel with the name Weeknd which eventually got famous as he uploaded 3 songs.
