”Mary Had a Little Lamb” is published (1830)

On this date in 1830, the famous nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb” was published by the firm Marsh, Capen & Lyon. It was published as a poem by Sarah Joseph Hale.

The origin and inspiration for the poem are competing theories. One holds that a man named John Roulstone wrote the first four lines and that Hale wrote the last twelve, which explains why those are less child-like. Others claim Hale wrote the entire thing.

It wasn’t until later in 1830 when Lowell Mason set the nursery rhyme to an actual melody with repeating verses, which is probably the most familiar version of the rhyme we know today. It was also the first audio recorded by Thomas Edison for the phonograph in 1877.

First night game of Major League Baseball (1935)

Night games in Major League Baseball seem to be a standard today. Playing under the lights, or even just being a spectator, can add a whole different and exciting dynamic to the game.

However, before this date in 1935, a night game was never played in Major League Baseball. This particular game was played at Crosley Field in Cincinnati, Ohio. It had the Reds beating the Phillies 2-1.

Fun fact: the World Series never saw its first night game until 1971 and it became a staple for the playoffs and World Series itself since most people can watch the game after school or work.
