Mike Myers is born (1963)

On this date in 1963, the Canadian-American actor, comedian, screenwriter and film producer, Mike Myers (born Michael John Myers) was born. He is most known for his roles in comedy on TV and film.

Myers got his start in commercials at the age of 2. After high school, he joined Second City, an improv group. He would later become a member of Saturday Night Live.

After, he would star in numerous comedy roles in film, one of which he is famously known for in Wayne’s World, which was actually adapted from the SNL skit he performed. He is also known for his roles in the Austin Powers movies and the voice of Shrek.

Star Wars is released in theaters (1977)

When one thinks of space, nerds, geeks, sci-fi or even collectibles, there’s a good chance Star Wars makes an appearance. On this date, the release of the original Star Wars occurred, beginning the start of what would become a massive franchise.

Starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and others, it earned $461 million in the U.S. and $314 million overseas. With that, it surpassed Jaws to become the highest-grossing film of all time. It would hold this record until the release of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

It was one of the first films to be selected for the U.S. Library of Congress’ National Film Registry. in 2005, British Film Institute declared it in their list of the 50 films to be seen by the age of 14. It is currently regarded as one of the most important films in the history of motion pictures and has launched an industry of products from comic books and video games to amusement park rides and TV spinoffs.

Oprah airs her last show (2011)

Oprah Winfrey is a global icon. Dubbed the “Queen of All Media,” she is most known as a talk show host and huge philanthropist. She was the richest African American of the 20th century and North America’s first multi-billionaire African American and has been ranked the greatest philanthropist in American history.

On this date in 2011, she aired her last program of the Oprah Winfrey Show. It aired nationally for 25 seasons from September 8th, 1986 to May 25th, 2011.

It received 47 Daytime Emmy Awards, and probably could have gotten more until Oprah stopped submitting it for consideration in 2000. In 2002, it was ranked at #49 on the 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time. In 2013, it ranked 19th on that very same list.
