I have seen the bow wave of a minuteman missile punch a hole in solid overcast in Alaska. A blue hole opened up in front of the missile, seemed magical at the time, until i discussed it with the rocket crew. The punch hole i saw closed up in much less than a minute and was not very wide.

Interesting. Do you have a picture of that?
I will ask around. I did not personally take any pictures I was at work. Maybe someone still has it on a cd somewhere this was in the 1980s but engineers are fastidious creatures so there may be copies available.
