Paleontologists report the fossil dates back 34,000 years
Some kid went searching for arrowheads in Iowa and found something much rarer: the fossil of a prehistoric mastodon.
Reports claim that the 30-inch bone belonged to a young mastodon, which is an elephant-like animal believed to have roamed the lands of Iowa around 34,000 years ago.
Paleontologists with the University of Iowa, which now has possession of the fossil, say the mastodon stood around 7-feet.
The juvenile who donated the jaw and related bones to the repository did so anonymously, saying they didn’t want to encourage people to trespass on their property looking for fossils.
Apparently, there could be more fossils on the property, as the owners found other fossils there years ago.
