Dear Hivers,
In two weeks I go to Spain and I will also stay in Denia/Javea and guess what happened today !
Trash divers in Javea(cat:Xabia) find gold coins
In short some free divers were cleaning up trash from the see floor in JAvea (near Alicante) when they saw a shiny coin. They were able to get a few coins out and with these went to get some help of "real"scubadivers of the Guardia Civil.
The scuba divers took up the rest of the 53 coins and nails of some kind of chest.
(pic of the treasure made by the divers)
What kind of coins are it?
From reading some Spanish Text I see they are Roman coins of the 4th and 5th century after Christ.
Emperors on the coins are:
- Valentiniano I (3 ),
- Valentiniano II (7 ),
- Teodosio I (15 ),
- Arcadio (17),
- Honorio (10 )
and one unknown till cleaning
Let me give yo an example of the internet of such a coin :
THEODOSIUS SOLIDUS
I know these coins are called solidus and indeed are of the Byzantium period (eastern roman period with Constantinople as capital city ; current Istanbul in Turkey)
Oh, if only I would have been there too.....
The coins will be cleaned in the Alicante Archeological Museum. So we will have to visit that too !
enjoy
Goldrooster
OMG! Sounds like a fairytale but it’s true. Would be funny if divers would find ancient Bitcoins)
That’s why gold is gold. 1,500 years on the sea floor and still sparkling!
Cool story.
Ohh my I would have loved to have found these @goldrooster, a once in a lifetime find!!😀
Cha-Ching! What a lucky find! Is there more to the story? Like governmental legal bureaucratic BS like "Illegally finding treasure without a license ..." 🤔
No , in fact they warned the Guardia Civil (National police) and they took it out . One for the State and one in their own pocket maybe ......
We know how these happy treasure stories often turn out when authorities get involved.
