Yesterday, I was viewing a story on the BBC titled 'How Late is too Late?' A member parliament in the UK offered to resign due to arriving late, due to the fact that he should have been somewhere to answer a question, but wasn't. The BBC article continues by asking five journalists from different countries their opinions on punctuality.
The journalists' points of view are interesting but it raised several questions for me. Maybe everyone can help by contributing answers:
- Is it fair to categorise an entire country to be either punctual or not?
- In some countries are there variations between different regions?
- How would you describe punctuality in your country/region?
- Do you have a particularly strong opinion about how things are in another country?
Let's see if there is a general consensus or wildly different opinions...
Also, if you have an amusing anecdote about timekeeping please add (it's always good to include some humour in a debate)
Thanks for reading, I hope you can contribute

Nice first post! Welcome on steemit. =)
Without talking about work conditions, in Austria where I am for the moment, most of the people in Vienna like to be in time or little bit earlier. In general it is not well received to be late. In France and in Belgium where I lived before, usually people are late with around 15up to 30min of marge and its more normal. However, it's a general perception, because it is also true that everyone I met in these countries have their own rythm depending on their own lifestyle.
I am looking forward to your next posts!Best, Jean
thanks for taking the time to reply. I didn't know that generally speaking people in France and Belgium were a bit more laid back regarding time keeping. I've learnt something at least.
I was interested the post, then it fell into place when i saw the translation into Spanish! The age old conflict between uk thinking and Spanish perhaps? Sometimes I think timekeeping is about confidence. In Spain, where people are generally much more communal and less likely to be individualists, they have faith and belief that the person will turn up. It doesnt matter to be late, it will happen. In the Uk, we have a lot less faith in each other so have a pessimistic attitude that the person will turn up and everything will run smoothely. Personally I am always early. That is not a great characteristic either!!
Thanks for your thoughts on this topic. I'd never really thought about the confidence aspect before. It's a really good point.
the reason for posting in spanish was simply to try to expand the conversation to more people, with the intention that with more feedback I might learn more. Personally I feel we are too quick to stereotype people from different countries and cultures. The journalists' opinions on the original article were very much along the lines of...I'm from Nicaragua and we are all like this or I'm from Japan and we are all like this.
count on my vote, I hope yours
