BMW said that batteries in its electric vehicles and hybrids are designed for a minimum of 15 years of service. Then the capacity will drop to 70%, but they will continue to work
In addition to the relatively high cost and not the largest stock of potential electric car owners, it is also usually frightened by the limited battery life. However, the head of the battery division of the German automaker BMW assures that the fully electric and hybrid models of this brand are designed for at least 15 years of active use, which is more than enough for the average buyer.
In an interview with CarAdvice, Andreas Raith said that buyers of electric BMWs can count on the fact that even after 15 years the battery of their electric cars will retain at least 70% of their capacity.
In this case, after 15 years, the available capacity, power and efficiency of the batteries will decrease, but the batteries themselves will continue to work. Owners of such age electric vehicles will be able to use them for small-distance trips or replace them with new ones using old batteries as home energy storage systems.
"This is not just a marketing statement, our batteries were specially designed in such a way that they could be used without any problems the whole life cycle of the car. And we can prove this statement with data obtained from the actual operation of our electrical models, "Andreas Wright said.
Thus, even an unsuitable battery for normal use in an electric car can benefit the owner by charging at night from the network at a green tariff and giving out energy to the home network during periods of peak load. Well, when it grows so much that it can not benefit even in such a sparing mode, it can be recycled using lithium, nickel, copper and other components to create new batteries.
Note that, depending on luck, Nissan Leaf after a couple of years of active use can show results in 70-80% of the passport capacity and range, which is well known to buyers of second-hand specimens of this model in Ukraine.

70% after 15 years isn't that bad right? The question for me: Is there anything in the 30% that is crucial to have? Mainly from a safety standpoint.
I dont think that a lot of ppl have a car more then 15 years anyway the i8 is such a beautiful car <3

This electric car movement is great, but they need to crack, or release, the battery tech. That's where it's at :). Good informative post. Thank you
