So in today's unbelievable news, Greta Thunberg, has been selected as TIME's Person of the Year.
Immediate responses:
Speaking of China...
I honestly can't believe that the protesters in Hong Kong didn't win.
Yes, Greta has made a splash in the media. People all over the world have talked about her... for a day or two.
As far as impact or influence on the world? You know, the self-described criteria that TIME has always presented? Pretty much none. She yelled at some politicos to do better. Good luck with that.
The HK protests, on the other hand, are accomplishing actual changes against one of the world powers. And it remains to be seen whether ChinaGov will come in and flatten the entire place or not.
What do you think? Was Greta the right choice to influence world climate policy?
That moment when DJTJR agrees with you:
It may have just been done to piss off Trumpists.
I doubt that Time would have been so specific as the Hong Kong protesters. But protesters in a broader sense (HK plus Gilets Jaunes, Chile, and others) would have been a good pick.
The HK protesters were in the poll the TIME had running along with Greta, Trump, Bernie, etc etc. So they were definitely being considered.
But yeah, it's been quiet a year for protests.
So, Time as a publication wants to piss off about 30% of it's potential audience?
While I think you could be correct it is a hysterical business decision.
No wonder people are flocking to the Internet for their "News"
Poor Greta is an underage child actress. Not a person of the year.
My teen girls had strong opinions too, none of which they hold today. :)
Also, while there is consensus on climate change, there is no consensus on how much or what the solutions are.
Oh wait, I bet a lot of people will use the word science, without actually having looked at the science. :)
Surely you don't mean to suggest that people just have knee-jerk reactions to misleading headlines?
Greta is the puppet of the year! I really share most of the environmental ideas with her. And she indeed made some agitation all over the world regarding the environment. However I still believe she is a puppet of governments and big self untitled eco companies. She is focusing on people's effort to help the environment, but most of the topics require expenses. Buy electric cars (more expensive), buy bio (more expensive), etc... Why doesn't she speaks about reducing , repairing, buying local, drive less... She is a puppet preparing us for a new capitalism based on ECO. I consider myself an eco person, even trying to do zero waste, but I don't agree at all on her's (them) main eco focus. I leave you an interesting book. Nice topic, nice brainstorm! Thanks!

How is that already a book? lol
I still can't figure out how a 16 yr old can treat us like she is an adult. I don't get it.
Powerful force, moral indignation is.
