Texas inmates in Texas prisons have found a way to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. More than 6,600 inmates have donated $53,863 from their commissary funds to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark says more than 6,600 inmates donated money between Aug. 31 and Sept. 30. Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane on Aug. 25. The commissary funds are usually used by inmates to buy food and supplies while they’re incarcerated. This wasn’t the first time Texas prison inmates have donated money to help after a natural disaster. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, inmates donated more than $40,000 to the American Red Cross.

** I took information from news sites and I linked the one that came up in my news feed locally. I love how even prison inmates can come together in the face of a natural disaster to help others! At times I am so happy to be human. Other times not so much. I really hope that the money is used the way it was intended to be used to help the victims. This is one of the best pieces of news I've read all day!
While looking up more information on this article I came across some peoples views that prisoners should not be allowed to donate anything while they are incarcerated including their organs when and if they die while incarcerated. I really don't get the big deal about now allowing these people to give back to society while they are serving their time. I personally have nothing against letting them do what they can to reach out and help. As long as they are paying their debt to society then what's the big deal? Sometimes people cease to amaze me. :o
I think the same as you: I really don't get the big deal about not allowing these people to give back to society while they are serving their time letting them do what they can to reach out and help...
I guess some people view being able to help and contribute to society is a privileged not a right and the whole idea of punishment is being cut off from society. In my opinion keeping with attitudes like that then there is really no hope of true rehabilitation. Only in America, eh?
I agree with you bout letting prisoners help community . That is some kind of make up for their transgressions. I mean isn't that the purpose of prisons to make people think about what have they done and change. Good post
Thanks @faces it's nice to have someone to agree with me! I though this news article was more positive than most that I see. It also showed that prisoners are people too and are capable of doing good.
