OnePlus has announced that its two-year-old OnePlus 3 and 3T devices will receive Android P – the new version of the operating system – when it launches later this year.
The move is good news for older OnePlus phone users, giving those who bought either of the devices after they launched in 2016 a guaranteed refresh of their phone.
Android P was announced by the technology giant earlier this year and will feature a range of new artificial intelligence-based features including adaptive battery and brightness, which will automatically prioritise battery life where it’s needed and alter screen brightness based on light conditions.
It is also set to feature new wellbeing tools such as a dashboard where users can monitor how they’re using their phone to help alter any habits.
OnePlus said: “After internal discussions and evaluation, we have decided to focus our development resources on the Android P project, instead of upgrading the OnePlus 3 and 3T device to Android 8.1, so we can offer more exciting features and improvements for our OnePlus 3 and 3T users.”
So while it does mean that current 3 and 3T users will not be getting the current version of Android, their longer-term software prospects are looking good.
Android P is expected to start rolling out to users later this year, and OnePlus confirmed its newer devices – including this year’s OnePlus 6 – will also be getting the update.
