Nose Hair: 4 Terrifying Reasons You Should Never Pluck Or Wax Inside Your Nostrils

in #news7 years ago

It might come as a shock to some people, but, it turns out, all women have body hair. Gasp!

I know, it’s ridiculous, but since women have been removing stray strands for millennia, many people like to pretend that women just don’t have any to begin with.

Of course, we do. Us ladies might not be as hirsute as the men in our lives, but we’re still mammals.

Just like men, women have pubic hair, leg hair, chin hair, and more.

We also have nose hair, even though bushy nasal shrubbery is sometimes more associated with men.

Ours may not grow as wild and thick as men’s nose hair, but we definitely have it.

In fact, all people have nose hair, even children. It may become more significant as you get older, but we are all born with nose hair — it helps keep us healthy.

If your nose hair gets a little unruly, though, you might choose to pluck or wax it. Here’s why you should never, ever do that.

Nose hairs, also known as vibrissae, are the hairs at the opening of the nostrils.

Within the nasal cavity, there are also cilia, which are small hairlike structures, but are not the same as the nasal hairs we can see and feel inside our nostrils.

Why Do We Have Nose Hair?

According to Penn State’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, “Nasal hairs (vibrissae) at the opening of the nostrils trap large particles of dust that might otherwise be inhaled.”

The little hairs we have in our nose protect us against harmful environmental germs.

Why You Should Never Yank Out Your Nose Hair

Fundamentally, we should never pull out our nose hairs because they’re there for a reason! If we didn’t need them, we wouldn’t have them!

Hershey Medical Center explains, “When you breathe in through your nose or mouth, the air is ‘filtered’ through natural lines of defense that protect against illness and irritation of the respiratory tract.”

Reason #1: Plucking Can Cause Nasal Infections

Business Insider reports that when you pluck or wax your nose hairs, you can open up areas for germs to get inside.

These germs can cause infections within your nose — infections are bad enough when they’re on the outside of your body, but they’re worse when they’re partially inside, like in your nostrils.

Reason #2: You Can Get Ingrown Hairs In Your Nose

Whenever you pull hair anywhere on your body, you can get an ingrown hair, which can cause “inflammation, pain and tiny bumps in the area where the hair was removed,” according to the Mayo Clinic.

Most of us know how uncomfortable it is to get ingrown hairs on our bikini lines or in our armpits — getting one inside your nose is even worse.

Plus, it’s a lot harder to treat your ingrown hair properly when you can’t even see it.

Reason #3: It Affects The "Triangle Of Death"

Around your nose and mouth, there’s something known as the “triangle of death,” according to Allure.

This area goes from the bridge of your nose to the outside corners of your lips, and is known as the triangle of death because of how dangerous it can be to get an infection in this area.

If you get an infection in the triangle of death, it can easily spread to the brain, which can become deadly.

Reason #4: You Could Get A Deadly Brain Infection

Getting an infection in your nose can be not only dangerous, but potentially deadly.

Business Insider reports that “the same veins that carry blood out of the nose meet up with veins that carry blood out from the brain as well.”

What that means is that the germs from the nasal infection can make their way into the brain, causing problems like brain abscesses or bacterial meningitis — which can be deadly.

What To Do With Your Nose Hair Instead

If you’re wondering, “So, am I just supposed to let my nose hair grow free and wild?” the answer is no.

Don’t fret if your nose hairs start to get a little long — just trim them instead of plucking or waxing!

I agree with this write up, nose hair is actually meant to serve as a barrier to stop dust from entering your nose because of its moist nature.
