It's the end of a long reign. Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has resigned after 37 years of power, the president of the National Assembly announced at a special session of parliament, which was debating his dismissal on Tuesday (November 21st).
"I Robert Gabriel Mugabe (...) formally resign my presidency of the Republic of Zimbabwe with immediate effect," said the speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda, reading, with applause, the letter of resignation of the head of state.
Highly anticipated, the announcement of the departure of the Head of State was greeted in the streets of the capital Harare by a concert of honking horns. "We are just so happy and things are changing," Togo Ndhlalambi, a 32-year-old hairdresser, told AFP. "We've been awake for so long, waiting for this day, this country has gone through so many difficult times."
