The Minister of Health asks local entrepreneurs to start making more suitable condoms.
The case could smile if it does not cause serious public health problems. In Zimbabwe, health authorities lament that condoms imported from China are not suitable for local users because they are too small.
An area affected by AIDS
The case was relayed by the local press and in particular It is the Minister of Health, David Parirenyatwa, who wanted to alert the situation. It has indeed registered many complaints about the size of condoms imported from China that are too narrow and too thin for the local market.
Many Zimbabweans would then prefer to do without this protection while the country is one of the most affected in the world by AIDS. In fact, 13.5% of the population is HIV-positive and the number of patients would increase by 40,000 each year.
Towards local production?
David Parirenyatwa urged local entrepreneurs to look into the matter and to start making condoms made in Zimbabwe. For its part, the Chinese supplier indicated that it was working on the problem and that different sizes would be proposed in this market.
The size of condoms is a sensitive issue in many countries. In the United States for example, the opposite problem has been detected and their size should be reduced in the coming months
