Current CIA Director Mike Pompeo is to become the new US Secretary of State and replace former incumbent Rex Tillerson. This was confirmed by US President Donald Trump via a tweet.

Tillerson had never held an office in politics before. He grew up in Texas, studied engineering at Austin, joined the energy company in 1975, steadily climbing the corporate ladder, and was named head of the ExxonMobil oil company in 2004.
As successor to Pompeo, Trump appointed his deputy Gina Haspel, which will thus be the first woman to head the US foreign intelligence service.
