🗞 EU finance ministers want to tax digital companies more

in #news7 years ago

Apple, Facebook, Google and Co. pay very low taxes in the EU so far. The finance ministers of the largest countries in the eurozone want to change that - and are calling for a new tax for digital companies.

Several European finance ministers insist on changing the taxation of digital companies in a public letter. The current rules have led to tax losses in countries where such companies are active and making a profit, but are not necessarily physically present. So far, digital companies such as Google or Amazon can only be taxed where they have a registered office. But their online businesses extend well beyond that.

Work on long-term solutions must be enforced, according to the letter of the ministers . However, this should not prevent countries from implementing interim solutions. EU finance ministers recently called on the European Commission to seek solutions of the taxation of digital companies within the EU.
The letter was signed by finance ministers from France, Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Germany and the two EU Commissioners Valdis Dombrovskis and Pierre Moscovici.

The letter is addressed to the Argentine Minister of Finance Nicolás Dujovne. Argentina is currently chairing the G20 group and is therefore hosting a meeting of finance ministers and central bankers mid-month. There the topic of international taxation will also be addressed.

For a long time, the EU Comission has an eye on the tax practices of large US corporations. EU countries such as Ireland have historically attracted low-tax targeted multinational corporations. The Irish government was warned because of the minimum taxation by Apple a year ago by the Commission, to demand up to 13 billion euros from the US company. One solution to the problem could be that companies pay taxes where they generate their revenues.
