Regular marijuana users who have acute alcoholic pancreatitis and are admitted to hospitals have had less severe symptoms, says a study by the Mercer University of Macon School of Medicine in the United States.
The researchers concluded this less severe outcome after studying data on patients with primary or secondary diagnosis of alcoholic pancreatitis and discharged between 2006 and 2015
Thirty-eight patients had a high history of marijuana use and seventy-six others had not. The research showed the lowest percentage of so-called RAS and the lowest BISAP score on the BISAP scale that measures mortality from pancreatitis among those who tested positive for cannabis. In addition, his urea nitrogen data in the blood flow was also significantly lower, measures of kidney or liver impairment. The authors conclude that "cannabis could modulate the inflammatory effect of alcohol in the pancreas".
