Countries around the world are scrambling against the ransomware virus, while internet security monitors say the attack disproportionately targeting Russia.
The Russian cyber security firm Kaspersky Labs was among the first to recognize a virus called "Wanna Cry" that exploits a vulnerability in the Windows operating system to encrypt files without the user's permission.
A group of hackers known as "Shadow Brokers" is believed to steal the US National Security Agency's April program and deploy it to demand ransom of worldwide users for cash gains.
Kaspersky Labs initially reported 45,000 attacks by the virus in more than 70 countries where Russia was the most attacked. "The scope of the target and the victim appears to be much larger," the Kaspersky memorial report said.
Within hours another internet security company said the number of targeted computers was more than 75 thousand computers in 100 countries. The amount is expected to increase. [My / al]
