Crypto exchange Bitfinex wants to move to Switzerland
Trading platform Bitfinex, headquartered in the British Virgin Islands, is looking for a new home base. It points its arrows at the crypto-friendly Switzerland. Bitfinex is the fifth largest exchange in the world, based on daily trading volume. The move of such a large exchange can encourage other large crypto companies to do the same.
Switzerland, more specifically the city of Zug, was previously known as a 'safe haven' for smaller crypto companies to settle. It is an attractive location for international startups due to the smooth rules and procedures on blockchain technology and crypto coins.
Xapo, ShapeShift, Monetas and Etherisc are currently operating from Zug. A clapper such as the trading platform Bitfinex will soon join that list. Jean Louise van der Velde, CEO of the crypto exchange, confirmed the 'rumor' during an interview with the Swiss Handelszeitung.
Moving
- The Bitfinex summit has been in contact several times with the State Secretary for International Finance (SIF) and with Federal State Secretary Johann Schneider-Ammann, head of the Swiss Economic Department. Van der Velde wants to bring all Bitfinex and iFinex activities together in Zug because at present they are distributed over different locations.
"We are looking for a new domicile for Bitfinex and the parent company iFinex, where we want to merge the operations spread over several locations"
If Bitfinex realizes its plans, the parent company iFinex will have to move from the British Virgin Islands to Zug. And be transformed into a limited company (AG). This means that all legal and financial departments will have to operate from Switzerland, as well as technical support. In other words, all main activities must take place in Zug.
Crypto and blockchain are there to stay and possibly replace traditional systems. The Swiss financial market regulator Finma thinks it is important to set up a good system that is interesting for Switzerland as well as for crypto and blockchain companies.
