The special prosecutor who investigates Russiagate, Robert Mueller, wants to hear President Donald Trump in person in the coming weeks. Mueller's interest in particular for the dismissal of the former FBI chief, James Comey, and for the resignation of former national security adviser, Michael Flynn.
Last week Justice Minister Jeff Sessions had been heard for several hours by the Mueller team. Other characters close to the president have also been questioned recently, among them the son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner and the White House communications director Hope Hicks.
Trump's legal team will present "the next week" to Mueller the terms for the president's testimony, proposing a sort of hybrid, partly "de visu" and partly through a written declaration.
Michael Flynn announced his resignation as Trump's national security advisor on February 27, admitting he lied to vice president Mike Pence about his dealings with Moscow officials. He had discussed sanctions against Russia with the then Moscow ambassador to Washington Serghei Kislyak, prior to his inauguration in the White House. Then last December he pleaded guilty to lied to the FBI on the matter and said he was ready to cooperate with the investigation.
James Comey was fired by Trump last May. He then announced that the president had asked him for loyalty (to leave him in his place) and to close the investigation on Flynn. Listened to Congress, Comey said he believed he was fired by Trump to influence the course of the Russiagate investigation. Trump denied he had made such a request to Comey and he always denied any alleged collusion with the Kremlin during the election campaign.
The President reacts by flaunting tranquility: "I'm not worried," he told reporters urging him on the subject in the White House.
