Raleigh North Carolina Police convinced a County Judge to give them a warrant to order Google to handle over account identities on every single cell phone that went through a 17-acre area surrounding the crime scene. The search includes both residential and commercial targets.

Two of the cases involved a fatal shooting in which one party was seen on security cameras leaving the scene using a cell phone. The police were unsuccessful in breaking either case and turned to Google to provide bulk information on anyone passing through a large radius of the crime scene. Google was ordered to remain silent for months after the release of the information.

"From an average smartphone user's perspective, it's a little surprising once you start to learn the full scope of information about our locations and whereabouts and activities that companies like Google hold,"

Nathan Freed Wessler, staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union's Speech, Privacy and Technology Project.

Google is forced to time-stamped location coordinates for mobile devices entering and leaving the areas surrounding the crime scene. Detectives then will require additional information outside of the surrounding area for potential suspects. A final request will be made for the usernames, date of birth, and other identifying information on this list of suspects.

"We're not getting text messages or emails or phone calls without having to go through a different process and having additional information that might lead us to a specific individual,"

Wake County District Attorney

This type of mass information gather has been used four times in the last year by the Raleigh Police department. This is becoming the norm for police departments all over the United States. These warrants are mass blanket wide information gathering efforts. When specific targets are identified, far more information is released to law enforcement, frequently without notifying the suspect or public.

A lot more information regarding these cases can be found on WRAL.com.

That’s not surprising. It’s becoming more and more important to take steps to protect your privacy. It’s not that anything will happen today, but if leadership changes in the future you never know what they will go back and hold against you. Best not to have too much data on yourself piling up. Thanks for the post!

Just wait for Google to start billing the police for assisting with this type of data collection amd analysis. The government, even at the national/federal level has been comically behind in terms of tech aptitude. Google shouldn't do the work for free.... and doubtful the police have the resources amd knowledge to utilize the massive amount of data effectively on their own...

Well if it can help solve a crime then they should hand over the information.

1984 has finally arrived and the sheepile are as docile as ever. Scarry times are ahead. Will crypto and technology be able to save us?

Technology can either be used in good or bad way. It totally depends on who's using it. Good to know police knows they can be used at least.

that sucks, the other day I was using the google thing on my phone and I looked and it had my location all the way at the bottom of the page and it said "from this device" and I was like "oh shit" and quickly turned off the gps which I usually keep off but was on for some reason, and then I looked again and it once again had my location, from my WiFi IP address. They track you all the time. Big brother's wet dream.

Good news. I just found out from your post

Technology has been helping security men find the crime
This is the language of the age

Woow it's amazing with the army's ferocious spirit ... Previously I want to support you to be a witness in steemit but help me first with my upvote first

Guessing in the not so distant future criminals will start leaving their cell phones at home when they head off to commit crime.

Should've learned about burner phones by now....

is this information real?

am I real? Are you real? Important questions bro.

you are right, thanks for answer.bro

If you're skeptical of something, you can always take a couple seconds to Google it...even if it means you have to Google about Google. Haha. http://www.wral.com/to-find-suspects-police-quietly-turn-to-google/17377435/

Technology is help full for security

This is one of the many reasons I never carry a phone with me. I would hate to be any one of those people right now with every single thing in their life being looked at by law clerks.

1984 was suposed to be a warning not a damn guide book. I get trying to solve crimes but i really don't like having these entities spying on everyone like they are batman trying to find the joker using peoples phones.

The government does have the resources or know how to collect, analyze, and utilize all the data themselves and Google sure as hell isn't going to do it for free.

It sucks. We need some sort of cyber bill of rights because right now it's the Wild West but the companies have way too much power over the end user. Our privacy should be protected.

hi, friend, I see your 4-month-old post, but I confused, are you say about creation reward and I need little help, can you suggest me what is the best time for upvoting others post for getting more creation reward. yes I know best time is after 30 minutes but it is guaranteed or not so can you suggest me.

Generally, I recommend 20 minutes, 30 minutes is ideal if there are no significant votes prior to 30 minutes, and you know the post will do well when it finally gets discovered. It's virtually impossible to predict, that's why I recommend 20 minutes. You will give 1/3rd to the author but you generally will make more in the end.

Smaller posts generally 30 minutes is a good rule of thumb as they take longer to be discovered but run the risk of never being discovered.

Privacy compromised.

Gravel boxes attached to surveillance planes isn't enough?

The terms of service agreements go largely unread, and yet our rights are in essence handed over by clicking agree a million times on all of our devices.

Another good reason to use Duck Duck Go. :)

I really dislike this crap. I mean really. Would the same judge grant a warrant for DNA swabs in a 17 acre area? Not if he values his retirement.

Thanks for the information. It's better to know than not.

I tried Duck Duck Go, and it was worse than Bing. It's absolutely awful for a search engine.

Well yeah. But it's open source, web based with no memory at all.

Doesn't matter if you can't find a damn thing with it. I tried it for a week and I spend more time using the Google search keyword (forget how to do it, but you can force a query to use Google search instead of Duck Duck Go's native) as using Duck Duck Go results were so bad I could use Google search and remove 90% of the results and it was still more useful.

This reminds me of the Dark Knight where Batman had a special sonar which he uses to locate the Joker. The promise he made to Lucius Fox was that he would destroy the technology used to create the sonar. Why? Because it was an invasion of privacy.

It used "every one's" cell phone in Gotham to create a kind of GPS Sonar. And yes that entailed listening in on conversations. The potential for good was present; however, the potential for evil as well. Technology can be a double edged sword and we require better laws; dare I say better enforcement of those laws. Federal and local governments should not be above the law. Thanks for the article.

the technological advances will also be those that help to locate the thugs.
I did not know what you are saying.
