Rhode Island Bill will charge $20 fee to unblock porn

in #news7 years ago

I'm sure no one here looks at porn and won't affect them, but this opens the door to the fears many had about the lack of Net Neutrality.

There was an old "mock" up from 2014 when this started to become an issue that shows the direction the Internet will go if Net Neutrality was abolished. It is becoming closer to a reality than you think.

Source

There is currently a bill on the floor by the Rhode Island lawmakers that will charge $20 to enable access to porn. If you do not opt-in, access to any "sexual content and/or patently offensive material" will be blocked. The way this is worded, it will not be limited to porn only. In fact, I can see this being extended to communities like 4Chan, Reddit, and even Steemit as there are parts of the community that allow this sort of content.

There is actually a definition in the Rhode Island law that states what "patently offensive material" is, and it is very open-ended. Patently Office Material - "so offensive on its face as to affront current standards of decency."

As of right now, the fee is a $20 one-time fee after submitting in writing you acknowledge the dangers. If approved, it won't be long until this is a monthly fee and extends to things like gaming, movies, unmoderated communities, and whatever they can think of that will generate revenue.

We really should not fear problems like this, because solutions are born from problems. Totalitarian measures like this will just spurr further interest in new technologies to skirt the restrictions. An internet without net neutrality in the short run may look like a totalitarian hell hole, but due to an increased interest in decentralization an internet without net neutrality will ultimately look like an uncontrollable, decentralized, utopia. The free market is already responding to the problems.

Well put. "Solutions are born from problems." The free market will work it out, in time.

Might I add that YouTube's recent crackdown has only helped platforms like Steemit and Dtube.

yup..fuck youtube and thank you Dtube

This utopia will not be realized until a decentralization of the internet is made to be more convenient to the majority of internet users than a largely consolidated internet where people only visit a few specific sites.

I hope we find those solutions soon.

Great comment.

No link to a source???

I think this is what your post missed:
http://nymag.com/selectall/2018/03/rhode-island-porn-law-would-force-users-pay.html

The article suggests that the bill is likely to die in committee and not become law.

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/03/07/591483927/proposed-law-could-mean-no-such-thing-as-free-porn-in-rhode-island

I don't think it will pass but there will be much more coming now that the gates are open. It just takes one to start it all.

The sad thing is that the bill was introduced by a couple of Democrats. It would make more sense if it had been introduced by a Family-Values Republican bigamist who was having sex with a minor.

Times have changed. The dominant force pushing against sexual freedom is Sex Negative Reactionary Feminists otherwise known as snerfs and they're democrats. Because porn apparently "objectifies women".

Just use a VPN if you live there?

Come on! half of the people don't know how to use a VPN (I know, it's easy, but I mean a lot of people just dont know, that`s the reality)

Besides there's no need to use a VPN, the normal thing would be that they let you do whatever you want for the service you pay for. If I want to see porn why in hell I have to pay an additional fee, why they have to control what I do.

Yea I agree it's retarded. I was just offering a solution since there's probably no stopping it.

and yes I know, the best option is to use a VPN, but why we need to, that's the real problem.

just install Opera Developer and it has a built in VPN service, for free. No special skills needed. Just open a New Private Window an its is activated. Thank me later

IDK, i prefer by far TOR, its like a real incognito mode firefox.

I had it for a year now. At one time the VPN was 7 countries deep not it only US and Netherlands. Still better than having nothing.

nice post

By my understanding, people who are not interested in porn will be affected by regulations brought in to inhibit users of porn. It's like a smoking area that also has the probability of non-smokers walking by or being in the vicinity. Or road blocks to test for alcohol-affected drivers that also steals time of non-drinkers. I know I might sound judgmental, but I have no say over others' lives so why should their actions affect mine? Thank you for the post @themarkymark

This is some bu11shit right here!

The shape of things to come?

As I don't watch porn live on an island, I'm safe, for now....

Agreed, but with global warming places that were not islands can become islands due to rising sea levels, so this affects us all.

At the end of the day, if this were passed, the law would be circumvented or the due would be paid. People will mindlessly defend this, arguing it will protect the youth and keep the devil away when in reality the effect of this will be opposite.

Like the prohibition of alcohol, the prohibition or restriction of online porn or any online service will only provoke people to break the law.

thanks for that information xd

Sneaky sneaky. This is the age of political correctness, in most Western nations there isn't much that classifies as not being offensive anymore. This is another nail in the coffin of free speech and the notion that it is more important not to offend than it is to speak ones thoughts, which is what this all comes down to, absolute control over freedom.

The fact the porn industry exists as a multi-billion dollar orgy of oligarchic tapeworms and masses of people with no other options is a by-product of the de-industrialisation and financialization of Western economies. I don't know if this will hurt the porn industry or not but if it does there just aren't any jobs for people with those, skills.

This is totally wrong and I think it's time people start speaking up, the value of the blockchain and people who fight for decentralization of content, power, regulation, money, intellectual content, historic archival contents and anything that is of value to us which can be used to to keep us captive should start speaking up right now. I love entertainment and porn is a part of entertainment, artworks relating to porn and sex act is as old as the civilization of man and its value should not be tampered with. It's time we bring sex out of the dark room and talk about it as it ought to and any regulatory body who feels they have the power to hinder net neutrality belongs to the pre-civilization era of man. I say again, anyone who cares about free speech should care about this. PERIOD!

I sure hope Substratum doesn't disappoint. .. There's certainly been more than enough FUD about the project that they've come back from quite a bit recently with their limited beta. Still if it succeeds in doing what they say it will it will be one of the most important around

It will be interesting to see what happens with this.

Proposed by 2 democrats and the verbiage would force ISP's to comply or be fined.

You should make a new 'mockup' showing the government forcing people to pay, instead of the ISP's. All of the fees and fines go right to the government pockets.

Jeeze. You can take the Puritan out of the state, but you can't take the state out of Puritanism :)

Incredible. And for the record I don't watch porn.

I never watched porn either... 👍 😎 👀

What are you talking about?

wow,,, well information,,, it help to us... thanks for share

This is some real horseshit

I guess the goal is keep the weather bad, Keep the people indoors and make them pay to play😈

Interesting post. Thanks for sharing.

And suddenly violent crime in Rhode Island rose by 3000%

While masturbation fell by an equal percentage?

Probably a direct corrolation lol.

hey while i have your attention i have a witness vote question. does it matter if you vote for the maximum number or just 1? I mean does you vote get split 25 ways or you can concentrate it on 1 person. sorry for the dumb question but i couldn't find the answer in a search.

Informative news for porn lover.

@rabeel this not time to be odd man out, u may feel it does not affect you but if we allow regulators get away with these type of regulations then it's only a matter of time before they make regulations that will affect you personally.

We already have wave of bans in our country, sad for me but most of the poor class people don't know any better so it goes well for them. Although the ban isn't fully effective since there are other plenty of sites that are accessible, it's kind of ridiculous.

Well hopefully it turns out to be a Colorado situation with weed and the porn subscriptions make the government so much tax revenue that they can improve the standard of living and offer new services.

A little sin tax never hurt anyone, its the same for booze and cigarettes. I', just trying to see the bright side here, lol we've been spoilt with access to so much free porn since the arrival of the internet.

Remember when you had to buy tapes and nudely mags?

"A little sin tax" hurts only the poor and, to an extent, intertwines government and religion, so the practice should be abolished. A luxury tax would be fairer, although still overreaching, some may argue.

Beautiful post

They want to fill the prisons. More laws create more criminals..

the real problem porn is not very sensitive for people although children because they need to know it, but there are limits certain should not know by them because not time feared off the control

Why you are so cute haa

I think that stupid
even if it does not like everyone so everyone should have the right to watch what he wants
What's next, the post is searched for porno newspapers

"Most of the people who join the porn industry come from broken homes. Many of the girls are sexually abused. So the porn industry actually lures in these kind of people to exploit them. So basically when someone is watching pornography, what you're really doing is contributing to the demise and destruction of adult survivors of sexual child abuse who are on drugs and have physical disease. That's really what you're watching because I promise you, nobody in that industry is healthy. - Shelley Lubben, Ex-Porn Star and Executive Director of Pink Cross Foundation

My left hand needs to take over so my right can punch whoever's idea this is in the noggin.

Malo? Bueno? mmm... a veces las mejores intenciones terminan en ganancia para los peores... gracias por el post

HAHAHA I'll see a few friends worried about having to pay that fee. But considering all the money generated by the pornographic industry will not affect them. There will always be consumers willing to cancel those $ 20 Greetings from Venezuela

PSA - You may have to go back to looking at Victora Secret Catalogues.

I have no problem paying for what I access on the Internet. Society as a whole accepts sin taxes.

Information on the Internet is free only because of tech smart people not because society believes in free access to everything and anything.

I would say I do not like at all where this could lead...

A slippery slope indeed..

Ugh. Thanks for bringing this to light.

They'd better start stockpiling

Not sure it will look like this. More likely the cable companies will simply raise prices on the dumb pipe, thus when you THINK you're "cutting the cord" by cancelling your $60 per month cable bill and replacing it with $20 per month for Netflix and Hulu, the dumb pipe company will simply up your internet access charge from $45 per month to $60. So then what was once $110 per month for you 5 years ago, and is $65 now, will quickly become $80. That'll sit for a year, and then they'll raise prices again, and again, and eventually your Netflix & Hulu plus MLB or whatever sport you watch will become > $110 per month you had 5 years ago. Cord officially cut, blood in your wallet.

You didn't think you could win, did you??

What a good post, thank you for your good contribution to this social network, is what we want good contribution, congratulations, keep it up!

You are correct! It will only start with porn and soon will be many other things!

Have you happened across any info regarding a decentralized net? I think this is the solution we're going to need and I'd like to look into it farther but it's been difficult finding good info on it.

Crazy to think this is happening in 2018.

soon only wealthy people will be able to afford to look at naked people online.

Where is pornhub when you need them?

Does that mean no more HBO in Rhode Island!? haha JK :)

interesting... i think @peppernrino will appreciate this...

nice post :)

I think it is a right decision from the government. What is your thinking?

I like your post. I'm sure no one here looks at porn and won't affect them, but this opens the door to the fears many had about the lack of Net Neutrality.
