Donghae and Gyeongui are the names of two historic railroad tracks that connect South Korea with North Korea.

Both railway networks were first built by the Japanese colonial government while trying to defend its influence in the northwestern region of China, including Manchuria, which was a source of conflict with Russia and China in World War II.
Meanwhile, after being separated after the end of the Korean War in 1953, parts of the Gyeongui rail network in North Korea were lost by the development of border areas, including the Military Ban Zone.
In addition, part of the linked rail network in South Korea is completely lost due to a series of theft and iron theft actions.
It was not until 2003 that the historic rail network was re-connected thanks to the agreement of the two countries' economic agreements including the opening of Kaesong special industrial area in June 2004.
Flashback a few years earlier plan to reconnect the rail network between the two countries, has actually been agreed since 2000.
Although the rebuilding of the railway network was primarily a freight transport, the governments of both countries also agreed on another function to reunite separate families in the North and South after the 1953 cease-fire.
